Oscar Predictions 2015: Post-NYFF

The Best Picture Frontrunners?
Now, that the fall festivals have weighed in, we have a clearer picture of the 2015 award landscape as far as nominations go.  Focus Features may have been overestimated (The Danish Girl, Suffragette), and the film it passed over early in the year (Beasts of No Nation) may have also instilled too much confidence in its Oscar chances.  Steve Jobs certainly is a player, despite how I rationalised all year that the signs pointed to it being a flop.  Spotlight practically came out of nowhere and has been the champion of Oscar pundits (they're also big on Brooklyn as well).  And there are three films (Joy, The Hateful Eight, The Revenant) that are still unknown as far as their potential.  One thing is certain, though: few people at this point will have predicted the eventual BP winner.

(+1).  Joy (20th-Century Fox).  The recent screening went very well, and this might be David O. Russell's crowning achievement.  With no winner that makes sense at this point, it's tempting to predict a late year release by a trusted filmmaker like Russell or Quentin Tarantino.  But, this film seems more geared to the AMPAS than Hateful.  However, it's rare for them to award Best Picture to a film fronted by a female.  Unfortunately.

(+23).  Spotlight (Open Road Films).  I doubted this because of its distributor, but this seems to be the year that a lot of smaller companies are coming on strong with the big and mid-level studios failing to bring their A-game collectively.  After Venice/Telluride/TIFF (MC 81 out of 10 reviews), this newspaper drama seems to be the consensus choice amongst the Oscar pundits.  Perhaps it has something to do with the movie being about the integrity of journalism, even though most of the, um, pundits just predict awards and stuff (and a lot of them lack integrity).  Not sure if this will win, but this seems primed to be a Top 5 player whatever the case.

(+1).  Inside Out (Disney).  It's hard to doubt an animated feature that has done exceptionally well commercially and critically, even if Up and Toy Story 3 got in under different rules (they only needed to make it into a set Top 10, whereas now films have to reach #1 on 5% of the ballots).  There hasn't been a Pixar film this successful since those two films, so ...

(+1).  Carol (TWC).  Currently MC 95 (11 reviews).  The critics will likely back this up more than Far From Heaven, and audiences should turn up more as well.

(+4).  The Revenant (20th-Century Fox).  I doubted this one all year, but if it comes out and has the reviews, it's going to be hard not to honour.  Still, wilderness tales don't have the best track record with the AMPAS.  There's reasonable room for doubt.

(+5).  Steve Jobs (Universal).  After Telluride, Danny Boyle showed that he wasn't delivering fourth-tier Social Network.  I was wrong.  It's more like third-tier.  MC 81 after 38 reviews.  Could still miss, but probably not if audiences show up for it.  It's angling for at least an easy three major nominations.

(-1).  Bridge of Spies (Disney).  I still have my doubts that Disney can get two films in.  MC 81 after 36 reviews isn't a bad place to start as far as getting them both in.  We'll have to see how this does commercially.

(--).  Son of Saul (SPC).  The Holocaust film made an impact at Cannes winning the Grand Jury Prize.  However, it doesn't boast any stars.  Might make it in, might not.  MC 90 (9 reviews) from Cannes.  After the fall festivals, however, it constantly rates at the top of group lists.  At the end of the day, it may end up being too bleak.

(+7).  Mad Max: Fury Road (Warner Bros).  The could be the underestimated dark horse that made off with critics and delivered an impressive $150M domestic this last Summer.  Certainly, it's a film on wheels that isn't normally something the AMPAS adhere too.  But, it has all the other appropriate boxes ticked, and this could be a way to reward George Miller with a nomination, who has a understated, but long history with the The Academy.  Also, it's Warner Brothers.  Never doubt them with Oscars.

(New).  Room (A24).  We'll have to see how a lot of the big studios do commercially before I gain complete confidence in this one.

(-1).  The Hateful Eight (TWC).  I was bearish on this all year, because this film was less baity than Tarantino's last two films, and I believed that is why he did so well with the AMPAS.  Hateful seems more like Reservoir Dogs in the Old West.  It might be something that the The Academy goes for, though, because, at the end of the day, they have been in a lovefest with him.  I could see this winning the big prize if the critics show up for this one.  This also seems like a classic SAG-ensemble nominee.

(+1)  Brooklyn (Fox Searchlight). Masterful studio with a fringe contender in just a few categories in a movie that might resonate with the AMPAS.   MC 74 (11 reviews).  I have my doubts about this one, but who knows.

(-12).  Beasts of No Nation (Netflix).  MC 80 after 24 reviews, a "small" film like this needs to stand out from Carol, Son of Saul, etc.  After its unprecedented simultaneously internet/theatrical premiere, I'm not sure who will be discussing this two months from now.

(Re-Entry) The Martian (20th-Century Fox).  Well, I clearly underestimated this one.  MC 81 after 46 reviews.

(-12)  The Danish Girl (Focus).

(-4)  The Big Short (Paramount).
